The media has been agog with the safe return of 21 Chibok girls from the den of their captors courtesy of the brave Nigerian soldiers and (if the other international friends given the credit would not want to share the euphoria) As much as the news of their return was wildly celebrated, it is saddening to see their sorry state to which these girls have been reduced to, they are not only malnourished ,their physical appearance speaks nothing more but sheer wicked as they must have experienced while in captivity away from the loving arms and care of their family and the larger society.
Now, that is a brief summary of the just returned Chibok girls. It is not news either that the dreaded terrorist group Boko Haram sacked several communities when they held sway in the north eastern part of the country, many homes were razed and millions of people plucked out of the comfort of their homes. Eventually camps were set up for these helpless Nigerians whose only hope for shelter and feeding is the government.
Nothing leaves a sour taste in the mouth than the unbelievable plight of these innocent citizens. How mean and stone cold can those charged with the responsibilities of the welfare of these IDPs be? It is bad enough that they have been confined to these camps ,but to subject them to an avalanche of trauma where they are meant to find succor is unpardonable. They survive Boko Haram but are on the brink of starvation.
A concerned citizen of Nigeria who is a banker said that It’s absurd and a big shame to read the gruesome tales coming out of Internally Displaced Persons’ camps in Nigeria. It is worrisome when you read of billions of naira being spent to cater for the occupants of these camps and stories such as this. Who are responsible for these crimes against their fellow citizens? But why are we like this? SHAME!
